How I Curl My Hair

Happy Thursday! The weekend is almost here and we're getting closer and closer to the holiday season, so today I'm sharing my tips on how to get the perfect waves! Below, you'll find a step-by-step guide of exactly how I curl my hair using my T3 SinglePass Luxe Straightening Iron, and a few products that I love to use when curling my hair! And make sure you're following me on Instagram because I'll be doing a live video next week to show you exactly how I achieve this wavy look!

How I Curl My Hair:

I typically wash my hair at night, so that's where my curling routine actually begins — right after washing my hair, I apply either Living Proof's Full Thickening Cream or Paul Mitchell's Extra Body Daily Boost spray. Both of these are incredible products for finer hair like mine, but one thing I love about Paul Mitchell's spray is that it's heat activated, so it'll give your hair even more volume if you just give it a quick blow dry in the morning before styling it.

Before curling, I always make sure to apply a heat protector spray to prevent damage — I'm currently loving Bumble and Bumble's Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer, which instantly protects, conditions and helps prepare your hair for styling.

I typically style my hair in three separate sections — bottom, middle, then top — but everyone has their own method when sectioning hair, so find what works best for you! As for me, I start off with the bottom section of my hair and clip up the rest until I'm ready for the next section.

When you have your first section ready, start off by holding out a 1-inch thick strand of hair. Then, bring your straightener to the hair, about 1 inch away from your scalp so you leave your roots looking natural. Clamp your straightener together and rotate the straightener back, away from your face. You should get about a 180-degree rotation, so the hair isn't wrapped fully around the straightener, but just halfway. Gently glide the rotated straightener down the strand of hair and leave out the bottom inch of hair so your ends look natural. This will give you that slightly undone look that's so in right now!

Repeat this process for each 1-inch strand, but keep in mind that you'll have to switch your grip on the straightener for the left and right sides of your head. Just be sure to always curl away from your face, ensuring that your curls will have a natural, bouncy look rather than closing in on your face. After you've worked your way around the first section of hair, repeat the process for the rest of your sections. Once you get to the top of your head, be sure to keep your roots and ends out so your hair has it's natural volume and gets that wavy look.

After you've finished your whole head, lightly spritz in some hairspray — my mom and I both swear by Nexxus' Comb Thru Volume Finishing Hair Spray for a natural, touchable hold. I like to flip my head over, shake the curls out, and spray in some hairspray while still upside down. Once you flip your hair back up you'll have voluminous beach waves that'll last all day!
