8 Ways to Get In the Hygge Spirit

Hygge season is officially upon us! If you have no idea what I'm talking about (don't worry, I didn't know about this a few months ago either), then allow the incredible author of The Little Book of Hygge to explain:

"Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe."

Meik Wiking, The Little Book of Hygge

The Danish philosophy of comfort and togetherness has made it's way around the world, becoming even more popular through books, magazines and television shows including Younger. And while there is no true translation for the term Hygge, it's all about creating a feeling.

Ya know the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you're snuggled up reading a book by candlelight? Or how about when you and your closest friends or family are all spending time together with good food, fun games, some wine and lots of great conversations and laughs? THAT'S hygge! To help you recreate that feeling more often this season, I'm sharing eight ways to get in the hygge spirit and I highly recommend you check out Wiking's book to learn even more!

8 Ways to Get In The Hygge Spirit:

1. Candles

If candles don't immediately put you in a relaxed mood then we can't be friends. I'm (halfway) joking, but candles really do set the tone for a relaxing day! I love lighting a lavender- or rose-scented candle because I know those will never fail to put me in a relaxed state of mind. Find the scents that are your favorite and always keep them on hand for a hygge night!

2. Cozy clothes

The perfect hygge outfit: leggings, a cozy sweater, big fuzzy socks and your hair up in a bun or braid! Hygge is all about comfort and honestly, comfort begins with what we clothe ourselves in. It's hard to relax in clothing that's tight or restricting, so get into your coziest outfit ever whenever you need some hygge time!

3. Friends and family

In his book, Wiking talks a lot about creating the feeling of hygge with other people — though it can certainly be achieved alone, too! Good company definitely plays into our happiness, so it only makes sense that we'd want to enjoy these comfortable, relaxed moments with the ones we love most.

4. Good food

Wiking warns to never over-indulge (because the feeling of being too stuffed is actually so not hygge), but enjoying some good food and drinks can definitely help put everyone in the hygge spirit. We all have at least one meal that our mom always used to make us, or something that brings us joy and comfort... so make sure to add that into your hygge routine!

5. A great book

If you're indulging in some me-time hygge, pick out a great book to enhance the experience. It can be any book under the sun — even a magazine will do. Just be sure to pick something that inspires or relaxes you so you can enjoy your alone time!

6. Avoid electronic devices

Let's be real here... phones are not relaxing at all. Rather than feeding into your FOMO by constantly checking social media, put your phone away for the night and just enjoy the quality time! You'll feel so much more peaceful and you'll thank yourself later for keeping your devices turned off.

7. Lots of blankets

What's cozier than your favorite blanket? Literally nothing! Wrap yourself up in your favorite fuzzy blanket or warm comforter while having hygge time. You'll feel instantly relaxed and at ease once you get cozy and comfortable.

8. A cozy spot

Whether it's a big comfortable couch or snuggled up in your bed, having a cozy spot dedicated to hygge time is definitely great! It's even better if you have a window seat or nook to cozy up in when you're in need of some relaxation.
