6 Steps to Take When Setting New Goals

Last week on the blog, we talked about why it’s so important to set goals for yourself each month. By now, we know that breaking down our New Year Resolutions makes them WAY more manageable and achievable, but what do we do when we’re ready to start setting those goals?

These six simple tips will help you set goals that you can stick to — and trust me when I say that you’ll crush them in no time! So get out that pen and paper and take note of these six steps to take when setting new goals!



Before setting goals, take some time to reflect first. Think about what goals you’ve accomplished in the past, and what steps you took to get there. You can also spend some time reflecting on the goals that didn’t go so well, and try to figure out what went wrong. By narrowing this down, you may feel more prepared to take on your goals this time around.

Think about why it’s important to you

Setting goals can be a tricky thing, because if your heart isn’t fully in it then you may struggle to accomplish it. When considering the goals you want to set, really spend some time figuring out WHY it’s so important to you that you hit that goal. For example, if I set a goal of reading 25 books in 2018, it sounds like I just wanna read more (which is awesome, and I certainly do!). But, this goal is important to me because I find reading to be relaxing and a good way for me to unwind after a long work week. If you know why your goals are important to you, you’re that much more likely to crush them! 

Plan out HOW

Once you have your goals in place, come up with a plan of how you’re going to accomplish them. Want to run a 5k by August? Figure out how much you should run each day in order to hit that goal on time. Want to take up yoga? Think about how much time you can dedicate to the practice each day, and what classes you’ll take or videos you’ll watch to improve. No matter what your goals are, develop a strong plan of the steps you’ll take every month/week/day in order to get there.

Research/Read a book

I don’t know about you, but when I set new goals, I want to learn everything under the sun about them. I always start out by trying to find good books for beginners in that field so that I can start out with the basics and try to learn as much as possible. Do some research and see what you can find to develop a strong understanding of your goal!

Write it down

Did you know that you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams JUST by writing them down?! With those numbers, you’d be silly not to at least give it a try. Take a few minutes each week to revisit your goals in your journal — did you make any progress towards accomplishing them this week? If so, how does it feel?! If not, what do you think you can do better next week? Take the time to write it all down and you’ll be a lot more likely to get to those goals!
