8 Carry-On Essentials

If you caught Monday's post, you already know that this week on Kaptivating Thoughts is all about TRAVEL! When it comes to traveling, packing is always the worst part — especially packing a carry-on bag. I don't know about you, but I always get nervous that I'm going to forget the most important item in my carry-on and be stuck 39,000 feet in the air just hating myself for it. That's why I'm sharing my eight absolutely necessary carry-on items that'll help make your flight as easy as possible! These are items that I always make sure to have in my carry-on purse, rather than a carry-on suitcase, because you never know if you'll have to check that bag at the last minute!

Layers! — I'm always super cold on flights, so I always make sure to wear layers and bring even more in my carry-on. I typically will go to the airport in leggings, sneakers, a t-shirt and a hoodie, and I'll pack warm, fluffy socks and a scarf in my bag just in case I get chilly on the way. My philosophy is that it's better to have too many layers than not enough — but maybe that's just because I totally hate being cold!

An outfit — If you're checking a bag in addition to your carry-on, this is ESSENTIAL... and even if you don't plan on checking your bag, there's a chance you might have to due to space once you board the plane so it's a good idea either way! Make sure you put a whole outfit in your carry-on just in case your bag gets lost along the way (but fingers crossed that won't happen). A friend also shared a brilliant idea with me the other day in regards to clothing while traveling — if you're traveling with another person, each of you swap an outfit and undergarments in each other's suitcase, to ensure you'll have one outfit in case a piece of luggage gets lost.

A book/magazine and headphones — Some flights have movies playing, some people listen to music with noise-cancelling headphones, and some people are readers... I'm in the latter group. That's why it's super important that I always have a book and/or magazine to read on the flight! Reading a book or listening to some awesome music honestly makes the time go by so fast, and you'll be there before you know it. I also always make a fun travel playlist on my iTunes before a trip so I can listen to that on the way there!

Liquids following the 3:1:1 rule — Since most of the liquids you'll bring are probably pretty essential to your routine, I always prefer to have them in my carry-on bag. Just make sure you're following the TSA's guidelines: liquids must be in a container that is 3.4 ounces or less, all liquid containers must fit in a 1-quart sized resealable bag, and each passenger is allowed 1 bag. I like to make sure I have eye drops, hand sanitizer, face/body lotion, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and mouth wash in this bag! If you're traveling with someone, try to coordinate what you'll each bring and share your products on the trip to save space in your bag!

Portable charger & charging cables — You certainly don't want to arrive at your destination without a charged cell phone! On my upcoming flight, I'm going to make sure to bring a portable charger for my phone and charging cables for my phone and camera in my carry-on bag.

Hair essentials  — A hair tie, bobby pins and headband are definitely must-haves in your bag! There's nothin worse than wishing you had something to pin your hair back with, but not having anything on hand.

Important documents — This is totally stating the obvious, but triple-check that you have your passport, flight information and hotel confirmation in your carry-on bag. Make sure that these are in the safest spot possible and always keep an eye (or arm) on your bag! I've heard horror stories of people getting stuck in foreign countries after their important documents were stolen from right next to them, so this is definitely the most important item you can put in your carry-on bag. And if you're traveling abroad, make sure to bring a pen in case you have to fill out immigration forms!

Beauty products — Every girl needs her beauty products to freshen up during and after a flight! Stay tuned on Friday for a post about my in-flight beauty routine and a few beauty products you absolutely need during your flight!
