6 Ways to Have a Happier 2018
Whether your New Year Resolutions fall into the category of health and fitness, travel, love and relationships, knowledge, finances or anything else under the sun, they all have one thing in common — achieving these goals will make you happy. After all, the one thing that all of us are truly after in life is happiness.
While there’s no one-size-fits-all equation to a joyful life, there are certainly things we can do to get that much closer to it. Lucky for us, authors like Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, give us all the insight we need to create a life of joy.
Wiking, who’s first book will make you want to snuggle up on the couch with your closest friends and favorite food (The Little Book of Hygge), recently published a second book about Lykke, or happiness. Wiking’s The Little Book of Lykke addresses six key factors that play into our happiness, which he came to by traveling the world and analyzing what brings us joy. 1. A SENSE OF COMMUNITY/TOGETHERNESS
One of Wiking’s six key factors for happiness is creating a sense of community and togetherness. Being a part of something bigger than yourself and contributing to a great community of like-minded individuals is a great way to improve your overall joy and happiness. Whether that means joining a gym, taking a class in something you’re passionate about, starting a club or anything else is totally up to you — just find a community that makes you feel welcome and appreciated!
2. BE PRESENT
From the moment you wake up in the morning to the time you hit the pillow at night, try to be as present in each moment as possible. It sounds cliché, but being present can help us find joy in even the smallest daily tasks. For example, rather than picking up your phone and scrolling through Instagram immediately upon waking up, take a few minutes to just be still, do some light stretches and enjoy the moment before the stress of work kicks in.
3. CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR FEELINGS
Throughout the day, be sure to check in with your mind and feelings. If you notice yourself getting worked up over something small, try to figure out why it’s bothering you and put an end to the bad feelings. If you catch yourself smiling at a memory or laughing with friends, stick those good vibes into your brain so you can come back to them later on when you’re feeling down!
4. DO ONE THING EVERY DAY TO RELAX
When working a 9-5, it’s so easy to get caught up in a less-than-perfect routine that doesn’t allow us to put much focus on ourselves. By adding something into your daily routine that relaxes you, you’re pretty much promising yourself that you’ll have at least one positive aspect to enjoy every single day. How awesome is that?! Even on your toughest days, you can come home and indulge in a spa night, a sport, a hobby or whatever you love to help bring more joy into your day.
5. FORM HEALTHY & FUN RITUALS
In addition to doing things to relax, it’s also important to create fun and healthy rituals with those you love. Even something as simple as having dinner together with your family, roommates or besties a few nights a week can bring you infinite joy. Think about a few fun and healthy rituals that you can start up with a friend or family member to bring both of you an extra dose of happiness each week.
6. KIND ACTS FOR OTHERS
Doing small acts of kindness brings us just as much joy (if not more!) as the recipients of our acts! Each month, think of one big thing you can do to brighten someone’s day — it doesn’t have to cost money and can be something as simple as donating some of your clothes that you can part with or cooking a homemade dinner for a loved one. Putting a smile on someone else’s face is guaranteed to make your day!
